Protein Powder Shakes

You may have come to this page because you have your heart set on a particular protein powder shake, such as Ensure or Herbalife or one of the other more popular protein powder shakes, and you are curious to see how it compares.  You might also just be looking for the best protein powder shake to lose weight or build muscle.

There are so many protein powders on the market, and it can make the task of choosing one daunting.  Also, you may have tried one in the past and it didn’t work or even worse … it tasted terrible!

Which is why I want to first identify some key areas you need to look for in a shake, and then breakdown some of the popular protein shakes out there with a recommendation from me on the best shake, not only because of the high quality but it also tastes great!  The shake I will be recommending has the initials JTH and I will share more about it at the end.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR (expand for details)

Make sure your shake does not contain common artificial sweeteners such as Sucralose (Splenda), Aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal, and Saccharin, as well as glucose, fructose, Dextrose and more.

Some people may experience negative reactions to artificial sweeteners and side effects may include headaches, migraines, gastric distress, depression and weight gain.

For artificial flavoring, the problem is that can mean anything. The Center for Science in the Public Interest notes that “companies keep the identity of artificial (and natural) flavorings a deep secret and are not required to list them on food labels.

Also, while the FDA states that artificial flavors are generally recognized as safe (GRAS), there are people with allergies, sensitivities, and intolerances associated with certain ingredients may experience adverse effects when consuming artificial flavors. The problem is that companies are not required to list the components of their artificial flavors unless they contain a common allergen.

And, nine dyes in wide use today in the US have been shown to be dangerous in some degree, by causing carcinogenicity, genotoxicity, or hypersensitivity. Some health risks related to the consumption of artificial food additives include: allergic reactions and food hypersensitivity, worsening of asthmatic symptoms and abdominal pain, diarrea and vomiting

These ingredients are often added to many weight loss and protein powders to increase richness and make them taste creamy. However, these fats are often derived from hydrogenated sources that contain trans fats, which are known to be more harmful than saturated fats. Trans fats raise levels of bad cholesterol and lower levels of good cholesterol.

Some soy proteins come from genetically-modified sources with high pesticide use. They contain chemical compounds which may cause hormonal disturbances in some people.

Fillers are often added to bulk up the protein and save money for the manufacturer. Some fillers include ingredients such as coconut flour, psyllium, sugar, which can cause gastric distress such as bloating, constipation and reflux in people who are susceptible to digestive issues.

This one surprises many people because they think it must be good for the gut if it has probiotics in the shake, but the amount and type of probiotics needed depends on the person and their current gut microbiota. A better option is to have pre-biotics which feeds your good bacteria.

Ingredients are listed in order of weight with most of the formula up front and least amount is at the bottom.  If sugar sucrose, dextrose concentrated fructose, cane syrup are in the first five ingredients – do not drink it. You are basically drinking sugar water and it will spike insulin. A better sugar is PalatinoseTM (isomaltulose) which is purely based on sucrose from sugar beet and has a low glycemic profile and doesn’t spike insulin. It’s a better alternative to common sugars. Most companies don’t use it because it’s too expensive.

The protein powder shake should equal 20 to 25 grams of protein but be careful.  If you are mixing it with milk, that is additional protein so the protein in the powder should be less.  If you get too much protein, it can convert to sugar and convert to fat so you gain weight and if you don’t get enough protein, then you get hungry.  And if it’s not 240 calories, you starve yourself and slow metabolism

The type of protein is also important. Dairy and milk proteins are least absorbed but whey protein is more absorbed. You may also see a protein blend collagen but it’s important what type of collagen – is it 1, 11 or 111 as it’s only 111 that is for muscle otherwise you are just drinking high end gello. It could be good but it will not build lean muscle or will not curb hunger. Hemp protein is only 50 to 55% absorbable.

In addition, ideally you should have at minimum 2 different proteins, but at best 3. The reason is the proteins will go into your bloodstream at different levels and absorb at different rates which will help to create lean muscle mass.

Lecithin is used in whey protein powder to prevent clumping of the protein powder but it also has many other health benefits too including being great for your brain.

There are 2 types of Lecithin used in whey protein powder: Soy Lecithin and Sunflower Lecithin. You want a protein powder with Sunflower Lecithin not soy. Many don’t want any type of soy in their diet due to concerns over the possible estrogenic effects of soy or because they are allergic to soy. Also some people want to avoid GMO ingredients and most Soy in the United States is GMO Soy.

Now that you know what should AND shouldn't be in your shake, Let's look at a comparison

Listed below are comparisons for Herbalife – Formula 1, Total Lean GNC, Slim Fast and Ensure Powder as well as the one I am recommending.  Please note there are other shakes from 310 to Ka’Chava and others that seem to have good ingredients, but you’ll see on Amazon there are many reviews on how they don’t taste good.  If it’s good for you and doesn’t taste good, you don’t want drinking a protein shake to be a chore.  You want to enjoy it.  The one I am recommending is whey but the company also has a plant protein shake that tastes delicious.  I know a person who owns a grocery store and she tried all the shakes in the store and shared nothing compares to the shake I am recommending.

Amount of Protein

Should have 20-25 grams of protein.  If you mix with milk (8 grams), protein powder mix can have 12 g and you would receive required protein.  Remember – too much and you gain weight, too little and you get hungry.

First Five Ingredients

The first five ingredients are so important as shared earlier in the reference of what to look for in your shake because they are listed by weight.  After the list of ingredients, see the notes below on the quality of the ingredients.

Important notes on the above ingredients:

First they all just have one protein except for JTH.  As shared in what to look for a shake, having more then one protein, allows it to be delivered at different times to your blood stream which helps with developing lean muscle.  Here are additional details:

Herbalife – Formula 1: Protein is the first ingredient, but it’s Soy Protein Isolate, which is one of the least bioavailable protein sources you can use and see notes above on what shouldn’t be in a shake under “No Soy Protein”.  Another red flag …Corn Syrup Solids is in one of the first 5 ingredients and that can cause health challenges (see reference below)  If you are seeking soy because you are vegan, see my notes below for a much better plant protein.

Total Lean GNC: First red flag is protein isn’t until the 5th ingredient. Second red flag is Fructooligosaccharides which is just short fructose chains, which can cause digestive upset and some people have allergic reactions to FOS.  Also Milk Protein is one of the least absorbed proteins.

Slim Fast: The first ingredient is sugar. So you are drinking a sugared shake. That is not healthy for you. And again, only 1 protein and it’s not until the 5th ingredient and like Total Lean GNC it uses Milk Protein which is one of the least absorbed proteins.

Ensure Powder: You are basically drinking sugar water with syrup and sugar at the top of the ingredient list and protein is not even in the first 5 ingredients.

JTH – Protein is the first ingredient and it’s also lactose free.  It also has 3 types of protein and instead of sugar, it has Isomaltulose (PalatinoseTM), which is purely based from sugar beet and has a low glycemic profile and doesn’t spike insulin. It has been used by athletes because it can help support energy in a constant and prolonged way, and doesn’t impact insulin like sugar can, which can interfere with athletic activity. It also supports fat burning and has been clinically shown to help manage blood sugar. It’s a better alternative to common sugars. Most companies don’t use it because it’s too expensive.

Amount of Sugar

Contains Artificial Flavors or Artificial Sugars?

How Many Calories

As I shared in what to look for in a shake, if you are seeking a meal replacement, it should have 240 calories (U.S. 180 -220 – health Canada 220-240)  Since this is a protein powder, consider that low fat Milk will be about 100 calories so the protein powder should only be about 140 calories.

Contain Prebiotics?

Many shakes will tout having probiotics, but as shared in what to look for in a shake, but the amount and type of probiotics needed depends on the person and their current gut microbiota. A better option is to have pre-biotics which feeds your good bacteria.

What Type of Lecithin?

Lecithin is used as an emulsifier that introduces foods with a creamy texture. But many protein brands use Soy Lecithin. You want to avoid Soy Lecithin as it’s produced almost always from Genetically Modified Soybeans, extracted with Hexane and/or Ethanol-Benzol, and often times further bleached with Hydrogen Peroxide. Sunflower lecithin is a better choice, contains omega naturally and great for your brain. Sunflower lecithin is the most healthy and beneficial. It’s rich in vitamins, minerals, and other important compounds needed in the body. It’s also the only guaranteed lecithin source that is non-GMO with a very low allergen record
